The AI-Augmented Manager’s Playbook: Reclaiming the Human ElementThe AI-Augmented Manager’s Playbook: Reclaiming the Human Element

Intro

In my 2025 professional summary, I discussed the significant shift of transitioning from maker to manager. It is a journey of purposeful change, but for those of us operating in the manufacturing and ERP space, the “manager” title often brings an avalanche of administrative overhead that can bury the actual leadership we’re meant to provide.

We’ve already looked at how AI never sleeps, helping us manage global handovers and maintain momentum across time zones without adding more meetings to an already crowded calendar. The next step in this evolution isn’t just about extending the day; it’s about using AI as a silent partner to offload the “admin slog” so we can return our focus to what really matters: team mentorship and high-level strategy.

Here is how the AI-augmented manager’s playbook is evolving for the modern enterprise:

1. Ditching the Documentation Drag

In my post on simplifying work and ditching app overload, I shared how I’ve narrowed my focus to a core stack of Outlook, Teams, and ChatGPT. For a manager, the real power lies in using these tools to automate the documentation trail. Whether it’s summarizing lengthy architectural debates in Teams or using AI to draft the first version of a production deployment report, AI turns hours of administrative typing into minutes of high-level review.

2. From Status Chasing to Proactive Insights

In the world of ERP delivery and manufacturing, we are used to monitoring production dashboards and system health telemetry. However, as a manager, you can’t afford to spend your day manually sifting through BI reports or ticket queues. AI acts as an enhancer for quality and efficiency, spotting trends in supply chain bottlenecks or delivery friction before they escalate into “red” status meetings. It moves the leader from being a “status chaser” to a proactive problem solver.

3. Leading with a “Fractional” Mindset

Even within a permanent role, the modern manager must often act like a fractional executive—splitting focus across multiple high-priority streams. By leveraging AI to handle the routine—the automated project updates and the categorization of team feedback—you create the mental bandwidth required for purposeful transformation and strategic planning.

4. Mentorship Over Management

The goal of this playbook is never to replace the leader; it is to enhance team capability. When AI handles the scheduling, the meeting summaries, and the basic tracking, your 1-on-1s stop being about “what is the status of Task X?” and start being about “how can I help you grow?” This is where the real value of leadership is found.

My 2026 journey is about turning these emerging tools into dependable work patterns. By offloading the administrative heavy lifting to AI, we aren’t just becoming more efficient; we are becoming more human, present leaders for our teams.
